Letter from Dr. John G. Neihardt endorsing Black Elk-Neihardt Park

June 11, 1973

To: Black Elk – Neihardt Park Board

Dear Members of the Board!

I sincerely approve of the Black Elk – Neihardt Park with its symbol of Universal Man stretching his arms over the Missouri River Valley. This will be one of many inspiring signs of a new social ascent. Black Elk longed for this day to come.

For the past forty years I have been engaged in furthering the humane teaching of the Sioux Indian seer Black Elk. It is now spread widely not only over the United States but over Europe. Its influence has been great and I am sure that influence will be enhanced by the proposed magnificent monument. The following lines from this inspired man will help us to sense his greatness! “Grandfather, all over the world the faces of living ones are alike. In tenderness they have come up out of the ground. Look upon your children with children in their arms, that they may face the winds and walk the Good Road to the Day of Quiet.”

I am deeply moved that you are making plans for this park and symbol, in itself an inspired and noble work of art. Please believe that I am writing this in deep humility and with gratitude for your kindly interest.

                                                                   Sincerely yours,
                                                                   (Signed)
                                                                   John G. Neihardt
